The Government of Uganda has distributed motorized forage choppers to 11 farmers in Ntungamo District as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance livestock farming.
The donation was officially handed over on Monday, April 14, 2025, during a ceremony held at the Ntungamo District Headquarters.
This initiative is part of the Agricultural Value Chain Development Program (AVCP), a government-led effort aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and commercialization. The AVCP focuses on improving household incomes, food security, and climate resilience through sustainable agricultural practices and enterprise development. It has been instrumental in scaling up the use of certified seeds, fertilizers, mechanization, and market access services to reach millions of smallholder farmers across Uganda.
According to Dr. Yaake Basulira, the Ntungamo District Veterinary Officer, the new equipment is expected to significantly improve feed processing efficiency.
“The choppers were received last week and officially handed over to the selected beneficiaries on Monday,” Dr. Basulira said. “This support is part of our broader effort to strengthen the productivity of farmers engaged in commercial agriculture.”
One of the recipients, Alex Twebaze, expressed gratitude for the donation, calling it a timely intervention. He highlighted the challenges of manually chopping grass, which he described as labor-intensive and inefficient.
“These modern forage choppers are a game-changer,” Twebaze said. “They’re adjustable, efficient, and allow us to cut grass into different sizes based on our animals’ feeding needs.”
The donation is expected to ease the workload for farmers, improve feed quality, and contribute to better animal health and higher dairy yields across the district.
The AVCP has previously achieved notable successes, including supporting over 2 million dairy and beef farmers and contributing to an increase in national milk production from 2.2 billion liters to a targeted 3.35 billion liters annually.
